🖤 From the ATADesigns Archive — No.22
In 2023, we were commissioned by Admiral Jellicoe House — a care home run by The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust in Portsmouth — to design a bespoke mural for their dementia care corridor.
The brief was to create something warm, joyful and deeply familiar — a design that would resonate with residents living with dementia and transport them, even momentarily, to a happier, simpler time.
The Inspiration
We looked to the English seaside for inspiration — specifically the much-loved Portsmouth seafront, with its colourful beach huts, striped deckchairs, sailboats bobbing on the water, and the irresistible sights of candy floss, ice cream and fish & chips.
The design draws on the nostalgic charm of 1950s British seaside life — a golden era of summer holidays, when families flocked to the coast and the simple pleasures of a day at the beach felt like the whole world. For many residents, familiar scenes of the British seaside — whatever decade they hold dearest — are often deeply embedded in long-term memory, making this kind of evocative, nostalgic imagery particularly powerful in bringing comfort, recognition and joy.
The result was a panoramic beach scene — vibrant, playful and full of period detail — designed to wrap around the corridor walls and create a complete immersive environment for residents and their families.
The Process
The mural was printed by our trusted print partner Wallsmiths, whose expertise in large-format contract-grade wallcoverings brought the design to life with exceptional colour and precision.
Installation was carried out by Paul Walden Interiors, whose meticulous approach ensured a flawless finish throughout the corridor.
ATADesigns and Wallsmiths regularly collaborate on bespoke mural and wallcovering projects for care homes and healthcare environments across the UK.
The Result
The finished mural transformed the corridor into a place of warmth, colour and storytelling — a space that feels less like a clinical environment and more like a gentle stroll along the seafront on a summer's day.
We are incredibly proud of this project and deeply grateful to The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust for entrusting us with such a meaningful commission.
